Upcoming Concerts and Events

In Fall 2021 the plan is to resume some music activities.  Seattle Wind Symphony, Puget SOund Youth Wind Ensemble, Brass Band Tacoma, and oterh groups are working on plans - but have no announcements yet

For Tacoma Community College Ensembles, I just sent out this email:

TCC Symphonic Band Community Musicians,

It has been such a strange, challenging, and lonely year. I miss seeing you and making music together. I remain optimistic that things are getting better for the performing arts. I am writing to share some updates and plans as we move towards Fall quarter.

My job:
I am now the permanent Dean of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Division at TCC. I was in this role as an interim position for over two years, but was interviewed and appointed as dean last spring. I will miss my classroom teaching, but plan to continue conducting the TCC Orchestra and TCC Symphonic Band. My days will continue to be filled with meetings and administrative assignments, and I will continue to conduct and perform outside of my Dean position (just like the last few years).

Last year:
COVID has been challenging for all education and performing arts. TCC has been operating remotely since Spring of 2020. We have only had a small number of nursing and art students on campus. All academic classes and music ensembles, have been operating as online courses. This has been very challenging, frustrating, but also rewarding. I really appreciate how some of you were able to participate in our virtual recording sessions. Thanks for your time and energy in keeping music alive at TCC and in our community! :)

2021-22 Year:
The college is planning to open starting this Fall, but our campus plans are not finalized. I expect that our reopening will be a gradual process over the academic year.

Because campus is still closed this summer quarter, we will not be hosting a summer orchestra concert. I plan to resume this event again in summer 2022.

We are planning to have Orchestra and Band up and running in some manner this Fall. This could include reduced numbers of musicians in ensembles, increased distancing between musicians, and other possible safety protocols. Our fall ensemble plan is a work in process, and will be communicated with all musicians later this summer.  Fall quarter begins on September 21, 2021.

Ensembles now Continuing Education:
A big change for community musicians in our ensembles will be registration through TCC Continuing Education. Registration through Continuing Education will more formally legitimize and recognize our dedication to community involvement in our music ensembles. Because of current COVID guidelines, guests are not being allowed on campus. When musicians register as students and in continuing education, this validates your presence and participation on campus. Also, using continuing education will provide some financial support to the TCC Music Department. I know that many of you have been in the TCC groups longer than I have been at TCC, and I hope all of you understand that this change is a positive way to continue the strong relationship with our academic and community involvement. I believe the cost will be $55 per quarter. That's about $5.50 per rehearsal, or $2.25 per hour of participation. I think the fee is reasonable, and I was so pleased that our Continuing Education department has been so supportive to keep costs down for participants.  This is not meant to exclude musicians, and I am willing to work with anyone where registration might pose an unnecessary burden. I will send more details about this as we get closer to Fall quarter.

Sorry for the lengthy email. I hope this information is helpful. Reach out if you have any questions.  I miss you, and making music together.

Be well, and keep practicing!
